Charlie’s Hill, by Sylvia Bretzloff

Charlie’s Hill, 2015
Ink on paper
43 x 34 cm

Sylvia Bretzloff studied fine arts at the University of Ottawa. Her work has been exhibited in the Ottawa Valley, and she has participated in the Pontiac Artists’ Studio Tour. For Charlie’s Hill, Sylvia Bretzloff used intaglio printmaking, employing two zinc metal plates and techniques of engraving and aquatint. These intaglio techniques were combined to incise the landscape image onto both zinc plates, creating recessed areas on each plate to hold the printing ink. The final image was created in several stages, with the zinc plates repeatedly immersed in a nitric acid bath. After a series of controlled acid etches, the finished zinc plates were inked and registered, allowing Sylvia Bretzloff to print the plates together and produce the final multicolored image.
