Conservation plays a vital role in preserving habitats and maintaining the ecological services that benefit both nature and people. Protected areas help sustain biodiversity while ensuring that essential ecosystem services—such as water filtration, carbon storage, and habitat preservation—continue to support local economies and community well-being. In the MRC Pontiac, a range of public and numerous privately conserved lands contribute to this effort. While many ecosystem services are shared across different habitats, some are habitat-specific. Wetlands, for example, provide vital services that support agriculture, tourism, and recreation, all of which generate economic opportunities while fostering a healthier environment for local populations.
As part of the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework, Quebec has committed to conserving 30% of its land and water areas by 2030. This ambitious target is crucial for ensuring long-term environmental resilience, mitigating climate change, and protecting the natural resources that sustain human communities. Conservation efforts in the MRC Pontiac contribute to this goal by expanding protected and conserved areas and promoting responsible land stewardship.
Private landowners play an essential role in conservation and have several options to contribute voluntarily. These include conservation agreements (entente de conservation), conservation easements (servitude de conservation), land sales, donations, ecological gifts (don écologique), and the creation of private nature reserves (réserve naturelle en milieu privé). Each option offers different levels of protection and land use restrictions, allowing landowners to choose an approach that aligns with their values and long-term vision for their property. By participating in conservation initiatives, private landowners can help protect critical habitats while supporting a sustainable future for both the environment and local communities.
