Hyesuk Kim is originally from Ulsan, a large coastal city in South-East of South-Korea. She completed a bachelor of Textile design in 2000 at Ulsan University where she had a chance to experiment the many facets and techniques relating to textile art. She moved in Campbell’s Bay in 2010 where she shares house, home and studio with her husband and child. Her tapestry designs often begin with ideas and inspirations focused around texture and colour. Work can evolve from anything from a piece of fabric, imagery in her mind or scenery from nature. The process of weaving is a calming activity garnering all her focus and dissipating any thoughts and anxieties. It can require an administrative patience, reflected by the scale of the tapestries she makes, sometimes taking up to a year to complete. The weaving technique Hyesuk Kim practices is very basic and colour from the yarn skeins like drawing with a pencil. It is an immersive process akin to mediation that she loves for the clarity of mind that it brings.
