The Council of Mayors of the MRC Pontiac is asking the government and the Minister responsible for Housing, Mme France-Élaine Duranceau, to reconsider its decision to terminate the RénoRégion program, an essential program that helps some of the most disadvantaged citizens in the regions of Quebec.
The purpose of the RénoRégion program is to provide financial assistance to the least affluent homeowners, often seniors or single-parent families living in rural areas, to carry out work to correct major defects in their modest residences.
Since 2022, $47.3 million has been invested in leaky roofs and windows in very poor condition in 2,449 projects across Quebec, with an average subsidy of $10,903. This cost represents a fraction of the price of a new home, and sound management of public funds requires that the program be continued. The Conseil des maires therefore calls on the Premier and the Minister responsible to show concern for our most vulnerable citizens and families by urgently remedying the situation.
“The cancellation of the RénoRégion program is a great disappointment. This program provided essential support to residents across Quebec, including many in the MRC Pontiac. For the period 2023-2025, more than 35 renovation projects in our MRC received funding totaling $640,000. The loss of this program will be felt by those who counted on it to maintain safe and dignified living conditions,” concludes Jane Toller, Warden of the MRC Pontiac.
