July 13, 2021, Ottawa – <\/strong>In communities across the country, Canadians are experiencing the impacts of climate change. By investing in initiatives that lower emissions and increase the resiliency of communities, we are creating jobs and building Canada\u2019s low-emission energy future.<\/p>\n

The Honourable Seamus O\u2019Regan Jr., Minister of Natural Resources and Joanne\u00a0Vanderheyden, President of the Federation of Canadian Municipalities (FCM), today announced an investment of $442,150 through FCM\u2019s Green Municipal Fund (GMF) to help reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and improve the quality of water and land in communities in Quebec.<\/p>\n

The\u00a0City of L\u00e9vis<\/strong>\u00a0will receive $163,750 for a pilot project to recycle used abrasives such as road salt and sand for reuse in the rehabilitation of road infrastructure.<\/p>\n

The\u00a0Soci\u00e9t\u00e9 de transport de Sherbrooke<\/strong>, in partnership with the\u00a0City of Sherbrooke<\/strong>, will receive $149,300 for a sustainable mobility structuring project in Sherbrooke. The objective of the pilot project is to encourage the population, via a rewards system, to make greater use of other modes of transportation than single occupancy vehicles<\/p>\n

The\u00a0Regional County Municipality of Nicolet-Yamaska<\/strong>\u00a0will receive $35,700 to study the potential of structuring sustainable mobility on the territory to obtain a global strategy that considers public, adapted and active transportation.<\/p>\n

The\u00a0Municipality of Saint-Val\u00e9rien<\/strong>\u00a0will receive $35,000 to implement its new 2022-2032 Sustainable Neighbourhood Development Action Plan and adopt sustainable development measures that reconcile environmental, economic and social aspects with a long-term vision.<\/p>\n

The\u00a0Town of Amqui<\/strong>\u00a0will receive $29,900 to set up a pilot project to ensure the sustainable management of stormwater in the Blais sector and reduce suspended solids and stormwater runoff in the area by 80 percent.<\/p>\n

The\u00a0Town of Saint-Sauveur<\/strong>\u00a0will receive $16,400 to assess the feasibility of purchasing an electric maintenance vehicle from local manufacturer Lion Electric to reduce its fossil fuel consumption.<\/p>\n

The\u00a0Regional County Municipality of Pontiac<\/strong>\u00a0will receive $12,100 for a feasibility study on the management of organic materials and identify the specific needs of each municipality in the RCM. The study will propose different management scenarios, such as the mode of collection and a mode of treatment to be able to divert organic materials from landfill.<\/p>\n

These varied initiatives highlight some of the ways GMF continues to build on its 20-year record of supporting transformative environmental initiatives at the municipal level. The Government of Canada has invested $1.65 billion in GMF since its inception, enabling municipalities to support projects like these that leverage local resources to drive innovative solutions.<\/p>\n
