It is present throughout the planets entire surface although its production, and therefore its concentration is not uniform. Radon is odorless, colorless and tasteless. It is undetectable by the human senses.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-51f1e9bd elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"51f1e9bd\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>The Canadian guideline regarding the level of radon in interior air is set at 200 Becquerel per cubic meter of air (Bq\/m3).Beyond this level, it is recommended that action is taken to reduce exposure\u00a0<strong>to the lowest concentration\u00a0<\/strong>reasonably achievable. Nonetheless, anything over 100 Bq\/m3 causes the risk to increase.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-230878aa e-con-full e-flex e-con e-parent\" data-id=\"230878aa\" data-element_type=\"container\" data-e-type=\"container\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-3789fc34 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"3789fc34\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>Whether your home is a recent or older construction, radon tends to accumulate in the lower and less ventilated rooms, where it can build up to high levels. It is cheaper and simpler to adopt preventive measures during the construction stage than it is to act later. In the drawings and specifications of your new home, be sure to include the preventive measures that are provided for in the 2010 National Building Code, as a means of preventing the infiltration of underground gases.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-4f129d42 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"4f129d42\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>On March 24, 2010, the Building Code was modified to meet Health Canada\u2019s radon guidelines. The Code recommends that builders install the lines needed for the subsequent installation of a radon extraction system,\u00a0<strong>in all constructions, regardless of their location.\u00a0<\/strong>The 2005 Code already featured basic protection measures, including the installation of a vapor barrier.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-132b462 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"132b462\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>In homes meeting the new standards, radon exposure will be less likely, and radon elimination, if necessary, will be easier. Other corrective and preventive measures are described in the CMHC guide.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-20dbc5cd e-con-full e-flex e-con e-parent\" data-id=\"20dbc5cd\" data-element_type=\"container\" data-e-type=\"container\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-577e0022 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"577e0022\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<h4>Radon Mitigation<\/h4><p>As each home is unique, it should be inspected by a qualified contractor who will recommend one or more attenuation measures.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-0be55d2 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"0be55d2\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>1- In most cases, these measures are simple, e.g.:<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-c556370 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"c556370\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<ul><li>Depressurize the ground underneath the house (suck up the gas) by installing a small ventilator that will exhaust the radon outside. This is the most effective and commonly used method.<\/li><li>Increase mechanical ventilation and make sure the ventilation system is well balanced.<\/li><li>Seal all cracks and openings in the foundation floors and walls, and around pipes and drains.<\/li><li>Make sure there is always water in the floor drain.<\/li><\/ul>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-cd047da elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"cd047da\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>2- In most cases, the cost of the radon attenuation work is relatively reasonable. It can add up to anywhere between $800 and $3,000.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-a18b6c3 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"a18b6c3\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>According to CAA-Quebec \u2014 Residential, a homeowner with home maintenance skills can perform part of the work himself, with some guidance from them.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-5312e6b9 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"5312e6b9\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<h4>Choose Your Contractor Carefully<\/h4><p>Make sure they are duly certified and uses the attenuation methods that suit your home.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-24eae0fd elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"24eae0fd\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<ul><li>Presently, Health Canada only recognizes the certification programs provided by the National Environmental Health Association (NEHA) and the National Radon Safety Board (NRSB).<\/li><li>Furthermore, we encourage you to consult the document \u201cRadon \u2013 A Guide for Canadian Homeowners\u201d published by the Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC).<\/li><\/ul>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-11bb2791 e-con-full e-flex e-con e-parent\" data-id=\"11bb2791\" data-element_type=\"container\" data-e-type=\"container\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-41a9180c elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"41a9180c\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<h4>Questions Designed to Properly Select Your Contractor<\/h4>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-5cec2d4 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"5cec2d4\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>You have already performed a 3-month radon measurement in your home and\u00a0<strong>your contractor would like you to do it again\u2026 Unnecessary!\u00a0<\/strong>Have you asked to see proof of his NEHA or NRSB certification? To maintain his certification, the contractor must keep upgrading his skills. Consult the list of certified contractors on the NEHA-NRPP and NRSB Websites to make sure they meet certification requirements.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-5d090a3 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"5d090a3\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<ul><li>Have you requested at least 3 quotes?<\/li><li>Have you demanded references?<\/li><li>Have you checked these references?<\/li><li>Are you certain there are no legal actions pending against the contractor?
