On March 1st, 2002, the MRC Pontiac received notice from the Ministry of Public Security mandating the MRC to develop and implement a fire safety cover plan for its territory. The cover plan is a fire risk management and decision-making tool for municipal elected officials. For people responsible for emergency operations, it is also a planning tool.
The Pontiac Regional Council of Elected Representatives realized its desire to meet the responsibilities that were given by the provincial government by hiring:
- A public security coordinator, responsible for the development and implementation of the fire safety cover plan; and,
- A fire prevention technician, responsible for the development of fire prevention programs, and managing fire risks by:
- Preparing fire prevention measures to reduce the likelihood of fires; and,
- Planning all fire response elements to minimize the consequences of a fire, and protect the public.
With the help of the 18 municipalities and their respective fire departments, the public security coordinator and fire prevention technician work to keep citizens safe.
