On September 24th, at the 2015 Fédération des municipalités du Québec Congress gala, the Government of Québec paid tribute to Mrs. Elsie Gibbons (1903-2003), the first woman mayor in the history of the province.
Mrs. Gibbons was elected mayor of Portage-du-Fort in 1953, a position she held until 1971. She was then re-elected in 1975, and left office in 1977. Mrs. Gibbons was also Warden of the Pontiac County from 1959 to 1961.
Accompanied by MRC Pontiac Warden Durocher, Mrs. Gibbons’ great-grand-son, Ryan Hillier, received a certificate of recognition awarded posthumously to Mrs. Gibbons by the Minister responsible for the Status of Women, Stéphanie Vallée, commemorating the 75th anniversary of women’s suffrage in Quebec.
