FQM Launches the Elsie-Gibbons Award

The Fédération québécoise des municipalités (FQM) issued a press release this morning announcing the creation of a new award to recognize women’s involvement in municipal politics. The “Elsie-Gibbons” award was so named for the first woman mayor in Quebec, elected in Portage-du-Fort in 1953.

Ms. Gibbons served as mayor from 1953 to 1971 and from 1975 to 1977. She was also the first woman warden in Quebec from 1959 to 1961.
